Firefox had previously relied on Google as its main search engine partner, with Google search powering Firefox browsers worldwide since 2004. This year, Firefox decided to choose different default search engine providers in the countries it operates in, with Yahoo landing U.S. search results for the next five years.

“Our new search strategy doubles down on our commitment to make Firefox a browser for everyone,” said Chris Beard, CEO at Mozilla, Firefox’s parent company in a blog post. “We believe it will empower more people, in more places with more choice and opportunity to innovate and ultimately put even more people in control over their lives online.”

The financial terms of the partnership were not disclosed on Yahoo or Mozilla’s websites. A Yahoo spokesperson said the partnership is a revenue sharing agreement, with certain guarantees, but declined to go into specifics.

Beard said Firefox users perform more than 100 billion searches on the Internet each year.

Firefox has a 16 percent market share for desktop web browsers in the United States, trailing behind Chrome and Internet Explorer, according to analytics firm StatCounter. Chrome controls about 39 percent of that market, the firm said.

Even though Google lost out to being Firefox’s default search engine, Google will still provide safe browsing and geolocation features on the web browser. Google will also be available as a “pre-installed search option,” Beard said.

Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer said the partnership sets up a framework for “future product integrations and expansion into international markets.”

“This partnership helps to expand our reach in search and gives us an opportunity to work even more closely with Mozilla to find ways to innovate in search, communications, and digital content,” Mayer said in a blog post.
